Wall Street ends nearly flat before holiday
After a volatile August, US markets were less volatile on Friday, ending the month with small changes, as the DJ30 and SPX500 closed with minute gains, while the NSDQ100 registered minuscule losses. Markets in the US and Canada are closed today, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
Today’s highlights: New tariffs kick into effect
New tariffs went into effect over the weekend: As part of the ongoing US-China trade war, new tariffs on imports kicked in yesterday in both countries. However, as the tariffs were expected, and last week both nations expressed an interest to resume trade negotiations, markets did not have a significant reaction this morning.
Asian markets mixed: The Caixin Manufacturing PMI published this morning, which showed strong manufacturing data in China, had a positive effect on markets, as the China50 index was up more than 1% at the time of writing, joined by the JPN225 index. In contrast, the HKG50 index was seen lower.
Bitcoin shows slight uptick: Last week, cryptocurrency markets experienced a major drop on Wednesday, as the majority of cryptos declined significantly. However, since Wednesday, markets remained relatively calm, showing little volatility throughout the week and the weekend. Over the past 24 hours, markets were mixed, as 5 top 10 cryptos registered gains. At the time of writing, Bitcoin was up around 1.5%, inching towards the $9,800 mark.
Dell rallies on earnings: The 3rd-largest manufacturer of PCs in the US announced its earnings on Thursday after the bell, beating analysts’ expectations. As a result, the DELL stock jumped more than 10% on Friday.
Oil shows slight recovery: In anticipation of new tariffs in the US and China, oil prices tumbled on Friday. However, this morning, the black gold showed a small recovery.
Europe opens mixed: While the UK100 opened 5 points higher, the GER30 and FRA40 were down 19 and 5 points, respectively.
