Wall Street posts best monthly gains since June
Despite finishing lower on Friday, US markets registered their best monthly gains since June. The DJ30 and SPX500 gained 3.7% and 3.4% last month, respectively, while the NSDQ100 gained 4.5%. As December begins, several events will be in focus, including the ongoing US-China trade dispute and the Fed’s last rate decision for the year. Today, markets could be affected by the ISM Manufacturing PMI, to be released at 15:00 GMT.
Today’s highlights: Cyber Monday could impact markets
- It’s cyber Monday: After shoppers shattered spending records on Black Friday, the annual followup Cyber Monday event will take place today, and is predicted to show an even larger increase in online spending, with major online retailers such as Amazon, Adobe and Target offering significant discounts.
- Lagarde to speak today: New European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will today testify before the European Parliament at 14:00 GMT. Lagarde’s testimony could impact the Euro and other key financial instruments.
- Oil shows recovery: After registering a massive drop to end last week due to concerns regarding the US-China trade war, the positive manufacturing data released in China, coupled with the possibility of further production cuts to be announced by OPEC this week, helped the black gold to start the week with some gains.
